Are you allowed to charge a restocking charge if a customer (ORDERS BY MISTAKE)
Hi everyone
does anyone know if i can charge a restocking charge when a customer marks as "orders by mistake" someone orders £600 worth of goods costing £50 to send the goods then returned it a day later as ordered by mistake.
looking to charge a 10% restock fee but not sure if this is allowed or not.

No you cannot charge a restocking fee unless the item is listed under Handmade

To be clear, Restocking Fees are illegal to charge under UK Consumer Protection law.

How on earth can someone order £600 worth of goods by mistake ? - were they returned in same condition as sent out ?

you could charge the return postage if thats what is clearly in your return policy for FBM! amazon charge return postage to customer if they select order by mistake etc. but ordering 600 worth order is more likely something else, someone maybe trying to clear your stock to 0 so other seller could seller theirs? i dont know just thinking if this could be the case? all the best

its covered on trading standards sites
you have to give a full refund including the cost of postage
they have to pay the return postage, they have to return in unused and sellable condition

You cannot charge a re-stocking fee.
You may charge is received back, but not exactly as new. Damage to makers box, no manual returned, etc.
Why was it so expensive to ship?
Buyers have to pay the return postage cost (unless certain items on Amazon). How much did that cost them, did you arrange and deduct from the refund?
You can show a price + shipping, Buyers then know the shipping cost, but can put off Buyers that like 'free' shipping. If they return after 14 days, they can also still be charged the shipping cost (cannot charge if returned within 14 days). If 'free' shipping, cannot charge for that.
You can limit someone to buy say 3 items maximum, etc, but that can lose you genuine orders.
It is worth ensuring the listing shows everything, eg exact sizes etc.
You may message a Buyer, ask a reason for the issue, and provide return details etc.
