Non VAT registered UK Business sellers

This is a heads up (possibly to a minority of business sellers) concerning the authoritarian attitude taken by Amazon toward non vat registered traders. I am not vat registered, have no plans to become a vat registered and trade below the vat threshold.

A customer contacted me on Tuesday, advising me that they had been blocked by Amazon prior to placing an order for one of my products. The reason given was that I could not provide an automated (or not) vat invoice. As I cannot provide a vat invoice, I have been excluded from receiving sales feeds from customers who have ticked a few preference boxes without understanding the implications that this tick box approach has on non-VAT registered sellers.

The customer could not care less about my vat status as they will be issued with an invoice that can be used to offset a purchase for tax purposes. However, despite my deficiencies as a non-compliant business, Amazon are quite happy to offer 30 days credit to any purchaser who wishes to take advantage of a credit facility that I did not approve. Why then can’t I choose to opt out of this little perk that may, or may not affect my turnover, but which decision at least, remains firmly in my hands? Amazon, if you’re listening, any chance of that little tick box appearing on my dashboard anytime soon? NO……oh, I didn’t think so.

Be aware non vat registered business account holders, Amazon, despite taking a 20% cut of your gross sale, is doing you no favours at all. By restricting our sales, they deprive themselves of their cut (as if they needed it) and desperately needed revenue for the vendor. It would be far better if customers could select an option to purchase from non-VAT suppliers if no suitable alternative were available.

My point is a little over simplified and possibly relates only to a minority of UK business sellers . But be aware, your fall in sales may in fact have nothing to do with your products , but more to do with Amazons draconian policy to exclude you from the UK marketplace for the reasons stated, even if those reasons are of no material importance to the purchaser (unless their buying policies expressly demands that only vat registered customers can become vendors).

On a positive note, if you are in a similar frame of mind to me I would just like to know that I am not alone. However, I will now just go and find a large cooking pot and place it on my head in anticipation of the backlash that I may receive from some contributors.

Have to disagree, but I wouldn’t consider this a backlash. For context, I am not VAT registered.

Amazon are giving business buyers the option to have a smoother buying experience. Might there be room for some improvement? Possibly, but I wouldn’t know how it looks to a business buyer as I’ve not gone through the process myself.

You can opt out of invoiced orders if that’s what you want to do. There is a fee of I believe 1.5%, but the option is there.

Just a little note from a Business Seller registered for VAT.

We provide full VAT invoice with each purchase, are VAT registered and compliant with full accounts department and an internal ordering system which issues invoices upon dispatch.

Yet Amazon allows customers to not see our offers simply because we didn’t sign up to their ‘Automated VAT Service’.

We upload invoices to our business orders manually (until our IT can gain access via API to upload them automatically from our actual ordering system) but are in fact still being excluded from customer searches if they chose the VAT option on their buyer account.

This exclusion is designed to force sellers to pay to Amazon to generate invoices, otherwise they won’t display your offers to B2B customers. I am not paying Amazon to ‘create’ invoices on our behalf - for one, I do not trust Amazon to correctly issue and calculate them and then be responsible when HMRC is auditing us.

I just wanted to mention it is not just Non-VAT registered businesses that are being targeted.

I do not think Amazon do enough to show the details, and compare.

I think they should put the prices in EXCLUDING VAT price order, if a VAT registered Buyer, rather than remove them.

I have a Business Buying Account, and unless you are registered with Amazon as a Seller under at least their basic VAT scheme, then it shows the prices as:

Seller A: £110.00 (a Seller that does not pay/charge VAT)

Seller B: £115.00 (a non registered VAT Seller)

Seller C: £100 + VAT (£120 inc VAT).

Seller D: £105 + VAT (£126 inc VAT).

So the ex VAT price is NOT in order.

If you can reclaim VAT, the cheapest Seller is B, but you have to be bothered to check they are really VAT registered etc. Seller C is definitely the cheapest, by £10, but Seller A, looks the cheapest and probably wins the Buy Box, and obtains the Order.

Rather than remove, put the Prices in this order:

Seller C: £100 + VAT (£120 inc VAT).

Seller D: £105 + VAT (£126 inc VAT).

Seller A: £110.00 (a Seller that does not pay/charge VAT)

Seller B: £115.00 (a non registered VAT Seller)

Example below of what it shows now

I used to be VAT registered in a previous business life and there are some business who only want to deal with VAT registered business so that they can claim the vat back. They cannot claim the VAT back on a purchase from someone who isn’t.

Just in case you hadn’t realised that.

I am not VAT registered now, and I make more money

I’ve said this on here before, but as a VAT-registered buyer and seller, I just wish that the UK government made VAT compulsory for all professional sellers (i.e. sole traders, partnerships and limited companies). Perhaps after Brexit they might head in that direction?

It would create a fairer playing field for all, particularly when competing against those selling on UK sites from abroad.

I personally won’t buy from non VAT-registered businesses generally, and have that flag set on my Amazon Business account as I do not want to have the effort of chasing invoices, or my accountant telling me we could have purchased cheaper elsewhere as we could have claimed the VAT back.
