Fees extortionate
I sold a book for £7.39 but fees were £3.98! Which was more than I paid for the item so doesn’t cover cost. This seems extortionate. I only sell a few books a year and am not a business seller. why these fees are so high? I am based in the UK,

The fees for books are highly advertised at 15.3% + £1 closing fee. As its unlikely you are paying for the professional account then you will pay an additional 75p fee.
You have to build it into your price or if you aren’t happy sell elsewhere.

You see the fees when you list the book and the fees sound about right

If you sell a book for £100 then the fees will seem a lot lower.
The reason you feel the fees are high is because there are fixed costs as part of the sale that makes selling very cheap items cost-ineffective, as you have discovered.

That is Amazon for you !
They have recently increased the FVF to £1.00 for all books including shipping that are over £5.00, plus there are all the other fees too, so you just have to increase your selling price.
If you only sell a few a year then you may have missed all the notifications about this.

Thank you. I’ll look to sell elsewhere now.

I think it’s many reasons some of which above have mentioned.
The ones I find are the so called YouTube videos on how to get rich quick selling on amazon, that are not informative make out it’s so easy and are way out of date for for current standards.
I also think the rise of the Chinese market places such as Alibaba or similar have caused many new sellers to fall foul.
With the holding hands with start ups, maybe amazon should do a step by step with sellers asking them to update shipping info, upload most recent invoices and what’s needed etc prior to getting anywhere near the sell your item button. Or even complete seller university.
Just ideas of course.
