VAT Registration
Hi,
I am currently required by law to register for VAT, and my accountant submitted the application with HMRC 2 weeks ago.
In the meantime I reached the 85k threshold and amazon sent me an email saying I am legally required to register for VAT so they stopped generating automated invoices on my behalf.
I was wondering if someone could help me, how am I supposed to send business customers a VAT invoice if I have not yet received a VAT number from HMRC?

If you have no vat number, and you are not registered for vat at the date of sale, you cannot send a vat invoice
This is why hmrc advise you register in time before going over the threshold
Speak to your accountant to confirm this
If you are uk based , vat registration shouldn’t take too long (presuming you are as there was no threshold if you aren’t)

If I recall correctly you must charge the correct amount including VAT, however you cannot send a VAT invoice until you receive your VAT number. You can subsequently re-raise a VAT invoice once your number is available.
You are required to remit VAT from the date you apply to be VAT registered, I believe it is called the effective date of registration.
