I thought books where 0% VAT rated, so why are amazon charging 20% on them ?

They're not charging VAT on books for UK sales.

Books are usually zero-rated for VAT, but Amazon might charge 20% VAT on e-books, third-party seller listings, or due to incorrect categorization. If you're charged VAT on a physical book, it's worth checking with Amazon support.

The VAT is on the fees; books are zero rated (not exempt); you can claim back the VAT on fees if you are VAT registered. You can see the VAT invoice in the Tax Document Library section of 'Reports'.
