Update to Sell Software Policy

We have updated our guidelines for the software products that you sell on Amazon. It is important that you are familiar with the list of prohibited and restricted items.

Prohibited software includes software that is duplicated or copied, digitally downloadable, an academic version or is not intended by the manufacturer for retail sale.

For the complete Sell Software policy, refer to our Help page.

I am disappointed that the policy was not updated correctly. There are some shortcomings that could lead to genuine sellers having products blocked in error.

academic version - some of these products are full “retail” editions, but stickered ‘academic’ and then only for sale to prequalified customers; (this are the ones amazon meant to block)

other products are marketed as retail boxed edition specifically for academic/student use - these ones amazon didnt mean to block thinking of “Microsoft Office Home & Student Edition”

digitally downloaded - many products are sold in a retail box but use a digital download to install for the customer amazon didnt mean to block these.

what Amazon meant to block were the sellers offering pirated software where they email/message the customer instructions of where to download the item from.
