How to registrer VAT in UK with a seller based in USA?
We are a US based company and 2 days ago got a call from Amazon UK telling us that they can help register vat for us in UK and will waive Euro 400 for the first year, and will send registration papers for us to fill the next day. I asked him if he had checked this info is for US based seller and replied he was contacting US and Canada sellers. That was really great new for us. Because we checked Amazon website, they can only do it with a seller based in EU. We can’t find links to register VAT for a US based seller. But after that we did not get any response from him. Asked customer service, they seemed no idea of it and asked us to register on line. But the on line registration is only good for EU business, not for a US business. Anyone knows how to handle it? thanks

You can register a US-based company for UK VAT. It doesn’t sound to me like the call you got was from Amazon – it may have been a scammer. Best not to use a third-party service, as it is simple enough to register for VAT online from the US yourself. Just go to HM Revenue and Customs (hmrc.gov.uk) and follow the links. If I recall correctly, I had to forward some documents in addition to filling out the online application but it wasn’t difficult in any way. Of course, once you have registered it is important to know when your filings will be due and to meet all of your filing obligations on time.
If you’re going to put goods into FBA, you will also want to register as a non-resident importer of record once you have your VAT number.

You can send email and ask. They reply in 1 day.
To file VAT return at HMRC hire accountant. You will pay less VAT and save more than you pay to accountant. Joe from http://ecommerceaccountants.co.uk/ has resonable rates. He did great job for me.

Hi all,
I had been keenly reading this thread. We also received a notification from amazn europe to submit a vat registration number. Please go through following and give your views:
-We are US based seller, sole proprietorship registered in US, having a bank account there only.
-We sell on amazon.uk and other European countries, but ship directly, not through FBA nor do we have a warehouse in UK/EU. (there is only a return address in UK)
-We sell/deal in books strictly, which are zero-rated.
-Nor does our annual turnover exceed the threshold of BP 75000 p.a.
Do we need to register for VAT. In any case, we have applied directly to HMRC on form VAT1 , asking for exemption under clause 17 of the form.
-Anybody here has applied for ‘exemption’ from VAT to HMRC and with what results? How long do they take to reply and do they mail/send a letter through post.
-Do we need to do anything else for the time being
-Even if a US based seller receives a VAT number, where is the link to fill it up. The link where one sees the countries names being dropped down, does not have US in it. Somebody please help.
Thanks to help us out. Would really appreciate input from Amazon Europe VAT member team too. Thanks again in advance,
ns
