Amazon fees - need packaging advice to reduce measurement

Hi, I have a product which is right on the cusp between ‘oversize’ and ‘standard’ - obviously there is a huge difference in fees between the 2! The weight is easily in ‘standard’ it is the measurements when in packaging.

My actual product is a bag which has been packaged in a plastic bag this time. So does anyone have any advice about a different packaging material to ensure the bag measures below the 45cm on the longest side please?

It would need to be stiffer, so that there is no chance of it measuring outside the 45cm. But also obviously easy and cheap for a factory to use.

Thank you for your help.

Difficult to suggest anything without knowing what the item looks like/feels like.

If you are measuring it at JUST on the borderline, the chances are that the Amazon measuring machine will measure it bigger. It always does as I believe it works on a line of sight fashion so any small bulges etc would be taken as the “extreme” edge.

If the bag can’t be folded, the only sure way, in my opinion, as so close to the borderline, is a box. Thin boxes, eg made from chipboard card, won’t add much to the size and the cost may be ok if a standard, off the shelf size can be purchased. Just watch they don’t get squashed.

Using a box will increase the overall volume for shipping purposes from your supplier to you but it might control your Amazon fees better.

I hope this helps you.

One bit of good advice I received a while back on trying to stop settlement problems in the large letter format making the dimensions over 25mm was to try to use a 25mm deep box which we did and it worked. So try getting hold of a box that is just right dimension wise and see if that will do for the product. I can see a problem for the FBA market but you could ship to the fulfilment centre in the chosen box

Any chance you could vacuum pack your bags?
That would reduce the size to the minimum and help protect them as well.

Place less contents in the bag and reduce the size by half . So if your bag weighs 1 kg now , try selling it in 500g sizes with the option of buying two bags at a time ?

May not work for your product . Dependent of what you are selling whether this option may work

if the item width wise is ok and only length is an issue
why not pack it into a shorter box but put it in diagonally?

Could the cardboard element be a sleeve (four sides) rather than a six sided box and then wrap plastic round the outside?

Thank you all for your replies - all very helpful. The bag is a fabric bag. At first I didn’t think it could be folded, but it seems to be OK. So the supplier is going to fold the bags and reduce the size of the poly bags they are in for the next shipment. Hopefully that will solve the issue.
