VIES verification and Spain
Dear Pan EU Sellers,
Have any of you managed to have your Spanish VAT number activated on VIES within the past year? If so, how?
We are VAT registered in Spain since January 2019 (Intra-EU VAT) and have been trying since then to get our number activated on VIES. The last we were told, the Madrid tax office is asking for each VIES applicant to a provide a certificate from Amazon stating the sellers intent to make sales in Spain.
We’ve requested this from Amazon but haven’t received any response (they have noted our Spanish VAT certificate on record but that is all).
It wasnt an issue before, but we are enabling the VAT caluclation service and currently we cannot include our Spanish VAT number, as Amazon requires this to be verified in VIES. Therefore not only will the service not function correctly for Spain, but we will also need to manually upload all invoices for this region.
Any advice from Pan EU sellers would be greatly appreciated!

My ‘local’ Spain VAT reg has been fine for invoices until a few days ago but now I have the same issue that it won’t validate for VIES until proving that I intend to store goods in Spain.
Why do tax authorities make it difficult to do business in their own countries?
I should be able to validate my local Spain vat reg as I’ve been paying VAT in sPAIN for a couple of years but have no idea how.

We’re in the same position. Amazon / Avalara handle our monthly VAT etc (for our sins). We were informed months ago of the need for this. After leaving it with us we told them it was there responsibilty and have been chasing it ever since. We have been chasing them on multiple cases since February and still it is not done. They say they are handling it and that there is a backlog, but how much faith I put in that response I really don’t know??!
