Customer requesting VAT invoice yet I'm not VAT registered
Hi - I was wondering if anyone could clarify? I have had contact from a customer requesting an invoice showing VAT. I have explained that as a new business I’m not VAT registered. I received the following email where he is now becoming a little aggressive…
I have looked at previous posts and believe that it’s illegal to provide any kind of VAT invoice if I’m not registered. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
'Whilst I appreciate you only started business in November and wish you all luck in your new venture .
I am not saying you have to be vat registered (I know you don’t have to be VAT registered )
But you have to supply me an invoice/ receipt with the VAT showing for goods purchased .
I have to produce this to the tax man for every penny spent and so do you
As you know you will need to keep a copy of this your self when it comes to paying the TAX man
Or perhaps you need to read up on starting a business !
Look forward to receiving a vat invoice / receipt by return
Hand write it if you like I don’t care as long as it has your company name address reg no the cost of the goods + the vat content’

Remind him that he hasn’t been charged for any VAT because you are not VAT registered.
Sounds like he’s just wanting to claim back what he hasn’t even spent.

Just send them an invoice to show what they paid but what you can’t do is to show that any vat has been charged.
If you don’t have an invoice template, just google one, there are many available.

It is illegal to produce an invoice or receipt showing any VAT on it if you are not registered for VAT. It is that simple.
You just need to provide a basic invoice showing your company address, the description and value of goods the customer paid and the date of transaction.
The buyer needs an invoice to do their company accounts/books, they would need a VAT receipt/invoice to do the VAT return. VAT on this purchase is irrelevant as none was charged by you. There is no VAT to reclaim from HMRC by the buyer.
You cannot, and are not required to, supply them with a VAT invoice. (as you are not VAT registered).

Send him an invoice with a £0.00 VAT figure?

Thanks everyone - I sent him a receipt showing 0 VAT and reiterated that as I’m not VAT registered there was no VAT added to his purchase.
Not heard form him since
