Amazon requesting VAT number for UK business under 85k threshold

Hi,

We are a new business with no turnover to date.

We are going to be selling via FBA in the UK and have a seller account setup.

Our business is a UK registered ltd. Both directors are from and live in the UK. We both pay taxes in the UK and we are below the 85k turnover required for VAT registration.

Despite this CS are adamant that we need to be VAT registered and need to provide a VAT number.

Have I missed something obvious and they are correct?

What about Beneficial Owners?
Any non-UK investors?

Can you post their notification requesting it

There’s something wrong with (or missing from) this information. On the face of it, the situation you describe would not require you to be VAT registered, providing your stock was stored only in the UK.

What I don’t understand is why you’ve been talking to Customer Services about this, rather than Seller Support. Customer Services don’t deal with this sort of thing.

Could you do as @The_Little_Shop has asked, and post here the notification/message you’ve had from Amazon?

Do you intend to sell outside UK and store stock in other EU countries ? If so, I believe you need to be VAT registered in those countries.

Go to settings - fulfilment by amazon
In the top section - PAN-EU, does it show as ‘disabled’ ?
If not, signing up alone without actually doing anything can prompt a vat requirement

Double check all of your supplied information, including trading addresses and returns address. It is possible something has defaulted/slipped to an incorrect country (I think someone else recently did that) when filling out one of the forms.

It’d be helpful to know whether you had done anything prior to Amazon telling you, as well as what Amazon actually said. Also had you entered a non-UK ship from address?

And post their actual notification

Does CH definitely show everyone as living in UK ?

Has anyone logged into the account from outside UK - flagging an IP address mismatch ? Any VA etc ?

Sorry All, they restricted our account as soon as we posted a thread so have been unable to reply.

  1. We are operating as a Ltd. Two directors who are both UK based no non-UK investors, beneficial owners are the two UK based directors.
  2. It is SS I’ve been speaking to not customer services.
  3. This is the message I get when trying to create a shipping plan - I acknowledge that when my inventory is stored in the UK, I am required to upload a UK VAT number in Seller Central. For more information, go to Europe tax and regulatory considerations.. SS missed the point of my question in a chat and just repeated to me that we must be UK based to be VAT exempt until the threshold.
  4. We do not intend to sell outside the UK
  5. In FBA settings PAN-EU is disabled
  6. I’ll go and check all the supplied info again
  7. Not entered any shipping addresses yet.
  8. No VA and not logged in from outside UK.

Did you ever have to supply a utility bill with your company address on ?
