Unauthorised Purchase

I’ve had a return authorised with the reason unauthorised purchase. I understand that the buyer will receive a prepaid return label to return the item… But… If the purchase is trully unauthorised it means either their buying account has been hacked or their credit/debit card used fraudulently. Whatever the reason surely the buyer should be reporting this to their bank and the police and shouldn’t Amazon expect the same to prevent it happening again?

I realise the buyer could have chosen the unauthorised purchase option just to get a free return but this in itself is fraud.

If the transaction is trully an unauthorised one surely the item should be returned unopened as it wasn’t ordered. Where do we as a seller stand if the item is opened and is not in the condition it was sent?

The item is reading matter. Thankfully it is a very cheap item and not really worth having back but after being stitched up a few times by a scammer I’m not about to be giving refunds for low value items, letting the buyer keep the item for free as that will be opening the floodgates for more of the same.

Any comments and advice will be welcomed.

Unauthorised sometimes also means it is a child in the family home, this is not necessarily fraud and least not one that most parents would want to pursue with the police.

It could also just be a reason to get a free return.

I have decided to just refund for low value returns now, it wasn’t a step I wanted to take but it doesn’t make financial sense to let customers return cheap products.

How would they know it wasn’t ordered if they don’t open it to see what it is?

And as for parental responsibility, you might need some rose-tinted specs! “Little Boston/Torquemada/ Marmalade is so clever, he knows how to order stuff from Amazon and he knows all my passwords, too”

If you send your items in “Single Use” vacuum sealed poly bags. I would definitely ask that it be returned still sealed.

Can someone put a link regarding new free customer returns (as I can’t find it now) as I’ve had to 2 and would like to know where I stand on ordered by mistake.
Thank you in advance.

as expected lots of comments and advice what does the buyer say about the transaction? its great to have these forums as a crutch where communication is a pandemic but surely they are the only ones that can throw any light on the cause of the problem they could possibly refuse delivery to save the cost of a return
