Is registering for VAT necessary?

I have sold to a business customer and Amazon are now sending me emails saying I ‘have to’ send the buyer a VAT invoice that should include my VAT number.
I am not VAT registered as nowhere near the £85K limit.
Amazon will not accept that there is no legal requirement in the UK to register for VAT below the threshold and have told me it is mandatory to provide this number.

Any suggestions would be welcome

You can register for Value Added Tax. You do not have to have hit the VAT threshold in order to register.

In your original setup, you may have completed part of the tick box questions relating to VAT. This is probably the reason Amazon are now asking for that relevant information.

You are also able to upload an invoice on the order page. This should include your full trading name, company number and other relevant details a company would expect in terms of an invoice. Have the messages from Amazon been sent prior to or after the uploaded invoice?

Check the email again:

The Amazon Business invoicing policy requires you to provide a compliant VAT invoice (or a receipt, if you are not legally obliged to issue a VAT invoice) within one business day after shipment confirmation for orders placed by Amazon Business customers.

As Barry says, you don’t have to register for VAT if under the threshold, however you can if you want to. Just upload an invoice. You can create one using this template.

Hello,

If you are not VAT registered seller you are not required to upload an invoice you can upload a receipt please see link below on requirements for providing VAT Invoices to Amazon Business customers.

Also below advises information required for receipt.

Providing VAT Invoices

If the order is from Amazon Business Customers, it’s mandatory to provide an invoice (or receipt).

If the order is from Consumers (Business to Customer or B2C), you can still use it to upload an invoice or receipt

thank you
