Approval Madness - Used Books

I'm listing some used books. Some of the publishers required approval (not sure why!) which was granted straight away. For one publisher (and why does Amazon insist on calling it a brand?) I've been asked to provide a letter from the 'manufacturer'

This is madness - nobody needs approval from a publisher to sell a used book. The book is already in the Amazon catalogue and several sellers have listed against it - surely they didn't get a letter from the publisher!!

Going round in circles here, and really don't want to give up as it is a matter of principle.

Carol, I have had this so often, and yes, it is madness, and personally if the approval is not given automatically, I just do not bother to list on Amazon. They have made a complete mess of the book catalogue.

"nobody needs approval from a publisher to sell a used book."

But the Amazon bots say you do, & who can argue with them. Even if the book was published in 1922 & the publisher has long since ceased trading, the bots still want a letter of authorisation. As JillyB says - sheer madness. Don't pursue it - that way madness lies! Bots rule, OK?

This is more of a problem with DVDs and CDs. Some book publishers are now owned by conglomerates that also market music and video and these are often 'gated'.

For instance, BBC media was recently taken over by a new company and it suddenly became almost impossbible to list or edit anything BBC related without the dreaded 'approval needed' message popping up.

I think the main concern is pirated copies e.g. printed in Taiwan in the 70's could now be circulating here. Sometimes it is an attempt to use trademark law inappropriately to control marketing/ pricing, which is, I.believe, actually illegal in the UK. When a new edition is due out soon, (e.g. textbooks) they can argue it could upset consumers who would prefer an updated version.

listing old books on Amazon is a nightmare. They May show under seller central but you try finding some on the main catalogue page.I recently had a Rupert 1959 withdrawn as overpriced. It was £35 for a very good one of the harder to find Annuals that I have been selling for over 36 years .Who decided that.
