Can Hats be a variation listing?

I sell 2 hats the same but different sizes.
They are currently listed separately with no errors.
I created and downloaded a product upload template for variations for hats. However, I cannot seem to get it to work.
One of the errors I get back is that the ‘Product Type’ (‘feed_product_type’) column is wrong. But when I click on the generated template Amazon created for me there is only one option to choose - ‘hat’. So how can it be in error?

If I click ‘edit’ on one of the hats from my Inventory page and then open up the ‘variations’ tab, I get a message saying variations are not allowed for this type of product.

Now - if this is the reason my template upload to create variations does not work - surely hats may come in various sizes and possibly colours - and they are under ‘Clothing’ category - so surely variations should be allowed?

Or am I doing something else wrong? Admittedly I am getting errors on other columns - but these also make no sense (such as Size missing when it is not - except on the Parent when it should be omitted)

I never seem to get product uploads from templates working.

I’ve checked one of the caps that we list, and it seems like you can’t have variations for hats, which blows my mind.

That is such a strange decision.

I have a hat product with size variations so it is possible. I find the error messages given when uploading the feed template can be very misleading sometimes. Check and amend any other attributes that may be incorrect and you may find that initial error is also resolved.

Hats has too many browse nodes underneath. If you haven’t completed the final browse node, it does give an error. What’s the final leaf you use?

OK - I have gotten a little further in listing hats with a color variation by listing under womens hats and setting the appropriate attribute to Unisex rather than Men or Women.

I have my 6 colors all listed, but there is no image on the main Parent
In my Inventory I can see 7 listings - the Parent and the 6 color variations
Beside the Parent it says ‘Incomplete’ - but when I click Edit I get this error:
This SKU has an inconsistent product classification with the ASIN. Please submit a feed to update this SKU to match the ASIN product classification.

What on earth does that mean??
How can the Child variations product classification be OK but the Parent not?

It seems that when I initially tried to create variations under Mens Hats but couldn’t, Amazon did actually in fact create the Parent (just not the Child variations). So the error above is because I was looking at the wrong Parent. Presumably the error actually meant that I was not allowed variations for that Product Classification of Mens Hats

The Parent for the Womens Hats listing was created but much further down in my Inventory. I can edit this and have added an image.

I have deleted the other Parent listing for Mens Hats.

What a joke it has taken me all morning to get this done when all Amazon needed to do was give correct error messages that are more meaningful.

What is the ASIN? (20 chars)

Starting to think the new product listing tool has problems. I just tried to add a new t-shirt and it would only let me create a Child listing. When I went into the variations tab it told me not available in that category, which is obvious nonsense but was identical to when I checked a cap earlier.

Try to delete all (parent and child) listings from your inventory, wait for 24 hours and then upload the template.

If ASINs were created with different “Product Type” Amazon may have locked this value and will not allow you to change it.

Some attributes are automatically unlocked after 24 hours if listings have been deleted.

Sometimes it does not work, but in most cases it does. Try and let me know.
