Changing variation theme key

I have a parent product with 3 variations. I want to change the variation name (not the listing name, but the variation name a customer would see to choose the variation they want). If I go into the child listing, the field when I can change the name has a warning under it “Editing variation theme keys is potentially dangerous. Please edit with caution.”

Has anyone made a change before? Did it break the listing?

For anyone viewing this in the future, I took a gamble, made the change and it works fine
