Manufacturer barcode does not uniquely identify product
Hi there,
We are trying to sell wine on Amazon and have an issue with the manufacturers barcode/EAN numbers. The problem is that wine producers generally use the same barcode for different vintages of a product. We keep on finding that the wine we want to sell is a different vintage from the wine that is listed on Amazon but they have the same barcode. Vintage is really important to wine buyers so we don’t want to piggy back off a listing of a different vintage, and end up with disgruntled customers who don’t receive what they were expecting. So how do we create a new listing for a different vintage when the barcode already exists on Amazon?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Regards Mark

You may find that your purchased GS1 barcodes get rejected if the wine manufacturer is a brand owner.
If they are a brand owner the only solution is to get the brand owner to create the listing.
I have exactly this problem with yoyos. The barcode is the same on 3 colours. I purchased GS1 EANs so that the colours could be listed separately (with the permission of the brand owner).
They all got pulled and I got a warning.

Hi @NEil, It seems to depend on the brand. For example, for the brand Meerlust we got the error:
You may not create new ASINs for the brand Meerlust. If you believe the product you want to sell is not currently in the Amazon catalog and should be added as a new ASIN, please copy and paste the following URL in a separate window and complete the form: https://sellercentral.amazon.co.uk/hz/approvalrequest?restrictionScope=CONTRIBUTION&brandName=Meerlust&brandId=368282&operationFilter=create_asin
I filled in all the details and provided images (with barcodes) but got a strange reply from support.
‘We’ve received an update from our internal team and they’ve informed that you’re not UPC exempted and hence is Rejected.’
They said to apply again but when I did this, the new case was immediately cancelled for being a duplicate.
I don’t understand why we can list under some brands and not others.
I got the same error for another brand, went through the same process and support got back saying that my appeal was rejected but that they could see that I was now allowed to create ASIN under that brand.
