Royal Mail OBA changes to barcode labels

Hi,

Has anyone else received an email from Royal Mail this morning regarding changes to terms and conditions ? It sounds like the end of PPI
Changes to items sent with unbarcoded labels
If you are affected by this change, you will have received our recent communication about us withdrawing all products that do not carry a 2D barcoded label, and the need to register for migration by 30 June 2021.

As a result, all customers using unbarcoded or 1D barcoded labels will need to begin migrating to, and to continue using, a solution that prints out 2D barcoded labels. 2D barcodes are data‑rich barcodes generated through shipping solutions, that enable Royal Mail to link an item to the posting customer’s account.

This change will impact the following services:

  • Royal Mail 1st Class
  • Royal Mail 2nd Class
  • Royal Mail 24®
  • Royal Mail 48®
  • Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed®by 9am or by 1pm
  • Royal Mail Signed For®

We’ll be in touch to provide you with your exact migration date and to support you through this process. If you’re unable to migrate to any of the shipping solutions, please let us know, by visiting royalmail.com/barcodingfeedback.

For more information, please go to royalmail.com/termschanges.

Changes to Business Mail and Advertising Mail
Business Mail and Advertising Mail customers will no longer be able to process Royal Mail Signed For® services via their Online Business Account (OBA). Any items requiring Royal Mail Signed For® will need to be processed separately via a shipping solution platform, where Signed For labels can be printed and applied to existing mail pieces.

From 12 July 2021, those customers using Royal Mail Signed For® will be contacted directly to begin their migration and supported through this change.

It only same as when they switched from a label with your HQ number on to the barcode label now they are moving again to a QR code label.
If you generate your labels on C&D then it already in use for your account mail.
On this occasion its the The OBA portal that is catching up to the C&D.

I had a chat with Royal Mail account manager about this two weeks ago and he said it was only affecting parcels not letters or large letters currently?

Just taken me hours to sort out

1st class large letters, in 3 different bands
Large letter that has extra items then becomes a parcel
All the stuff from my shop that has to be entered manually
Stuff that is too heavy and not cost effective to send royal mail, now needs parceforce
remove the items that are courier dispatched
check for separate orders from customers that can be combined
sort out 1st class / 2nd class parcels whilst doing the maths to work out the averages

not being able to manifest until tomorrow morning due to sorting office only being open 8-10am
and not know if I have worked out the averages correctly until it’s too late. nor know how much it’s cost

whereas previously

copy paste addresses onto label
8 / 9 lines in OBA and get immediate price

If I could switch to a single courier for everything I would.
I think lots of people will do this, so much easier to import into one shipping system like hermes
This was on about 85 orders over ebay/ amazon and my shop

Nightmare

Yes we have had the same email. We are mega old-fashioned rubber stamping large letters and parcels for mail we send out ourselves, averaging the weight of items in the sacks and using the SU1 code. :grinning:

Not looking forward to what looks like it is going to be more work sending stuff out. I’ve emailed our Royal Mail contact and am waiting to hear back from them.

I thought it said just packets last week, now it’s everything.

Royal Mail are an absolute joke and have not thought this through at all.

Those saying C&D works for them. great, but it doesn’t work for me, and 1000 orders per day I think stamps will be easier.

One other point, does anyone else here use IG1 or OZ1 for international mail ?

If so these are not mentioned on the list of services being removed from OBA - hopefully these are unaffected

I think this is RM weeding out the last of the PPI users and the opportunities for them to submit undeclared and mis-declared post. It’s pretty much a free for all with PPI with revenue protection checks being few and far between. With Click and Drop there’s no scope for underdeclaring at all and any mis-declarations are automatically picked up. I’m not saying any one here gets up to these tricks, but it definitely goes on.

We switched across at the end of last year, initially so we could carry on sending international when the requirements for barcodes became compulsory. I was skeptical initially but I’m a total convert now. It’s much faster and the free consumables from RM soon cover the cost of the printer.
