How does Amazon collect funds if my account balance is negative?

Amazon mistakenly refunded 1,100 of our customers and now our Amazon account balance is approx -£16,000. Obviously the Amazon payment system is going to try to collect this in the next few days. Do they take it from our bank account or charge it to a credit card. Any ideas?

They will take it from your bank account.

It will be taken from whichever card is registered as your primary payment method for that marketplace country. (If you have the funds available obviously).

How could they have mistakenly refunded 1100 customers?? And are you planning to pay it?

1,100 customer refunds? Was it a perceived product recall of some kind?

Transactions are made from your credit card registered to amazon

We are the brand owner and manufacturer of the product in question — and wanted to help clarify a few things based on the discussion so far:

  • Amazon mistakenly flagged the product as a solar viewing product, which is completely inaccurate and not intended for solar use in any way.
  • As the brand owner, we immediately appealed the violation on March 7th, 2025, the same day it was issued. Amazon reviewed and confirmed that the classification was incorrect, and the listing was reinstated.
  • Despite that, Amazon has since refunded FBA orders going back over a year.
  • Amazon has also sent out thousands of safety recall emails to every refunded customer falsely stating that our product was recalled because it is not safe for viewing a solar eclipse, and informing them that they were refunded as a result. This is incredibly damaging, not only to our reputation as a manufacturer but also to the businesses of our authorized sellers.
  • There is no product recall, no batch issue, and no safety risk whatsoever. This is a clear case of a false classification and internal error by Amazon.
