A3 poly bags - need air holes on top of suffocation label?

Hi there,

I have a product which is now almost ready to be shipped to Amazon for FBA.

However, the only thing I’m stuck on is the packaging…The item is A3 posters so my plan was to put the poster set inside an a3 bag and seal it. Then, sandwich the bag between cardboard inserts, and put all of this inside a 2nd poly bag, seal and then label etc.

I’ve heard some people say that they’re important, while others say that the bags need to be properly sealed with no holes in order to satisfy Amazon FBA packaging requirements…

I’m not looking for what i’ll probably get away with…I’d rather know what I need to legally do to make sure I’m all good on the legal front! :slightly_smiling_face:

Both bags per unit would have their own suffocation warning label, so that’s all ok, but my question is, do the bags need air holes? I had a look and found a lot of posts along these lines, but they rarely reached a concensus.

Each bag is around 430mm x 320mm (the 320mm side is the side with the opening).

The product will not be listed in a child/baby category (it’ll be under “stationery and office supplies”), but the final sub category will be classroom decoration, and so I suppose there is an increased chance of children coming in to contact with the packaging (which is adding an extra layer of concern!).

Tl:dr - do large size (340mm x 320mm) poly bags need air holes, if they already have suffocation warning labels on, especially if they are at an increased likelihood of coming in to contact with children?

Any help would be much appreicated!

Best wishes,

Sam.

According to the Amazon help pages, all poly bags with an opening of 5" or larger must have a “suffocation warning.”

Example: “Plastic bags can be dangerous. To avoid danger of suffocation; keep this bag away from babies and children.”

However, the only products which require air holes on poly bags are Toys. This is not limited to the specific category, but covers products which may be used by children younger than 14:

All bags used on toys (a toy is defined as any product or material designed or clearly intended for use in play by children of less than 14 years of age) thinner than 0.038mm and opening of 5 inches or more must have 6mm holes perforated and requires a suffocation warning label, and all bags greater than the size of a baby’s head must a have a warning printed. For example: ‘Plastic bags can be dangerous. To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this wrapper away from babies and children’

If I were you, I would comply with the requirements to avoid issues - just in case Amazon determines that your product could be used by children.
