Cancel VAT services with Avalara

Hi,

I’m not sure if this is the right forum, but I can’t find anything more specific. So, we’ve had enough of Avalara. One thing after another. Them asking for €150 PER return to claim the money back we paid to France is the final straw. We were barely making enough money to cover our costs in countries other than Germany, and I’ve had enough of all this EU crap. We have decided to pull out of VAT for FR/ES/IT/PL/CZ. So a few questions:

  1. How do we make sure all the stock currently held in those countries, gets moved to Germany? (where we are keeping out number)
  2. I assume people will still be able to order from amazon.fr, but our shipping fees + their delivery time would just be longer?
  3. How do we de-register for VAT? I would ask Avalara, but I expect they will say “oh, well you pay us 2 grand and we’ll do it for you”). How long does it normally take?

Hopefully someone has already been through this process and can shed some light. I was trying to weather it out with Covid, Brexit, and all these new VAT changes in the EU - but I just can’t deal with all the stress any more (and I’m sure I’m not alone)

Thanks!

Andy

  1. You cannot just get the stock moved to Germany.
You have the option of either selling it through or returning the goods.
But obviously you would need to stop Pan EU first.

  2. You would be using EFN orders, which you will find the charges for in the FBA fee schedule.

  3. Deregistering for VAT is another thing entirely. Some countries have minimum periods that you must be registered for. Not sure which is which off hand, but pretty sure some have two years.
So you still will need to continue doing returns, even with no sales in said countries.
No idea how long it actually takes, but I can’t imagine that the process takes more than a couple of weeks or so.
