FBA item packaging (brown paper?)

Hi, I had an item that got damaged after it was sent out by Amazon so I decided to pay for it returning so I could see exactly what was wrong with it. The item (chopping board, 20mm deep, 190mm high, 290mm wide) was returned to me packaged in just brown paper…no cardboard packaging surrounding it at all to protect it.
Is this just because it was already damaged- it’s not Amazon who’ve decided to pack some items in just paper now without any padding, is it? Thanks in advance.

All items sent to Amazon should ideally be pre packed as if you were sending them direct to the individual buyers, if there is any chance of those items being damaged anywhere between you and the customer.
Amazon are not renowned for their packaging skills, so you realistically need to prep items yourself to avoid this sort of situation arising, or simply accept the occasional loss.

The most likely scenario, is that the customer returned it in the paper.
Amazon then simply sent it on to you.

I understand that, but are they using paper instead of cardboard now as standard? Or is that specific to recalling an already damaged item?

I’ve recalled items before and they came in a cardboard envelope. This time it was paper which as a frequent Amazon customer as well as seller, I’ve never encountered before.

To be clear, this was a removal order for an FBA item that Amazon said was defective. I did not write the original post, a member of my company with less information about the item than me wrote it. Sorry for any confusion. I have no idea if the item was ever in possession of a customer and don’t really care that an already damaged item was insufficiently packed.

My concern is that if they have started sending items out in paper instead of cardboard, then lots of my items would be insufficiently packed when sent to customers. With the cardboard they usually use, they would be packed perfectly fine.

I think the brown bags have become more popular now for amazon with slim products (like chopping boards). From my FBA experience the general rule is:
If you send the item to amazon in a condition that it can be broken by dropping on the floor then your item will be sent to customers broken.
Although as a customer I ~(almost) always receive products in huge boxes with the most ridiculous amount of packaging, this does not appear to be how they send my products out.
Long story short, as I think someone above has said, send the item to amazon in packaging that you would be happy for them to send it out in.

Amazon FBA returns are appallingly packaged in whatever odd box Amazon happens to fund lying around. Often items are returned with just a sticker applied to the product which make it impossible to then resell them. This needs to be improved.

We’ve been reimbursed when customers have returned the item in the wrong/poor packaging. In some cases they have returned an item that’s not even ours.

Most of the time I just think about the big picture. Is it worth worrying about?
