Buyer asking for discount

We have a very tiny business we opened on Amazon last week. We only have 8 items and have had a couple of sales so far, nothing major. We have the ‘just launched’ on our name and no feedback as of yet of course.

Today I received a message from a lady who wanted to know how much of a discount she could get from buying 10 of the party decoration items and I’m not entirely sure how to go about this. After reading through forums and such, I’m tempted to press the ‘no reply needed’ button but, as a new and small business, I’m concerned my first feedback will be a negative one if she follows through with ordering.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

The easiest way might be to simply say that if she orders the 10 items you will imediately process a partial refund for xxx [after confirming shipped of course].
You can set up discount coupons or promotions, but a quick partial refund might be the simplest option.
If you don’t want to discount then just send a polite email declining the suggestion.
No need to ignore her though as that is not good customer service.

A buyer asking questions or requesting discounts prior to placing orders usually doesn’t end up well.

You are right when considering hitting the “No response needed” button, that’s how I would react.

Amazon isn’t eBay where buyers can negotiate prices and submit offers. You could also explain it to the buyer like this.

Thank you for such a quick response

I wasn’t entirely comfortable with ignoring altogether, but with little experience and scouring through forums it seemed to be the most popular course in case of a sort of snowflake effect.

I’ll send a reply, kindly declining. We do offer free delivery and the cost of shipping ten will rack up to a large parcel on its own. Hopefully, she will understand.

Simply ignoring the potential buyer, rather than responding politely with an answer, could well lead to a missed sale or bad feedback anyway as it would create a bad impression.

I have an item that often sells in multiples up to 20,if anyone wants a discount for example,if they want 10 I tell them to buy 9 & I send 10.Its extremely rare for a buyer to ask.
Another thing to note is on Amazon the message system is useless probably 8 out of 10 buyers will not see your message.

In your inventory on Seller Central, in the “business price” column (if you have this facility) there is an option for “Add Quantity Discounts”. If you want to give this buyer a discount, set this to “At Least - 10 - **% Off” . If they order 10 of that item, the discount will be applied.

Then after they have ordered you can remove the discount if you so wish
