How do I get a unique Product ID for the unique chemical I manufacture?
Hi,
I am unable to add an item to my catalogue to sell because it is lacking 2 required fields:
Product ID
Product ID type
I am a manufacturer of a unique research chemical that is not sold on Amazon.co.uk.
It does not have a GTIN it is not registered in the GS1 database, it has no EAN, UPC, ASIN etc
The only official data i have on it is the it’s correct IUPAC name, the correct CAS RN, and the correct HSN that i use to export it worldwide.
Initially I only want to list it as a 100g package.
I have taken local photo’s of it in its correct packaging with the correct product sticker on which is its name, weight=100g, GHS Warning: Irritant and my company name.
The photo is named by SKU.MAIN.jpg is within size limits and fills over 85% of the photo.
I listed as my company’s brand (an acronym of the company name), but as I have not registered my brand that failed. Until my business takes off I cannot afford the cost of registering a brand nor the lowest annual fee for the GS1 to issue a GTIN.
So I am happy to register the product as Generic, as there is no Product ID for it on any amazon site, in the GS1 database, nor via an exhaustive internet search,
I selected the box that states there is no GTIN.
It told me I had to request a GTIN exemption for its Category.
So as i would not let me select any sub-category I submitted the top level category: Business, Industry & Science
Brand: Generic
My brand exemption was refused and they gave me a database to search for the product GTIN, I searched and it does not exist, the help stated
if GTIN does not exist you can get an exemption if you are the item manufacturer, which I am.
I am the only manufacturer that sells it, I sell currently via my new company website and via Ebay where i have a 100% rating on 327 reviews, and have sold the product since July 2021.
So i selected reattempt exemption:
Under more detail. I specified the correct category would be:
Category: Business, Industry & Science > Lab & Scientific Products > Lab Chemicals > Organic Reagents
I listed all the details including CAS RN, HSN.
Told them that the product is not sold on Amazon currently and that it has no Product ID.
I stated happy to sell as Generic, could they supply an ASIN or unique product code so I can complete the last 2 fields for listing the product.
I even submitted another photo showing the product package along with the product box labelled as well and a print out of the 1st page of my website with headers showing today’s date.
The response I received was to not submit a duplicate case, even though they had closed the previous failed exemption submission because I did not reply within 6 hours of their reply.
So i i cancelled everything, and started form scratch, filling only the essential fields so as not to confuse any issue.
My Company name is now on the product sticker exactly case sensitive perfect the same as the company name i am using and am listed under.
I included a link to the ebay listing so they could see items sold.
The reply i got was a database to check through, and if no GTIN apply for exemption - exactly same email template as before.
So i requested help and listed all the above and asked please if you have a GTIN it must be internal only as it is not on the internet, could you provide it?
If you have no GTIN and I have no GTIN, I don’t really care if it is GTIN exempt or not could they please tell me what i need to tell them to be able to get a unique Product ID so I can list the item.
I don’t expect any useful reply or help from customer services.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Please if you know what is wrong, can you very simply explain what i should do?
Thank you for your time and any help,
Dan Harper

P.S. If i have missed anything out, let me know and i will update the post to include those detail

If your product has your company name on it then it is not generic
Apply for gtin exemption for your brand name in the category.
You might also have to apply for approval to sell the brand name (basically just proving to amazon that your product has that brand name on it, not to be confused with brand registry)
Keep your cases shirt and to the point. You ate talking to a bot who is probably using Google translate, too much waffle confuses it. You’ll need to be very patient with seller support, you do get there in the end, usually after you feel like throwing the pc out the window out of frustration

I would think that you would have to go through a lot of other hoops, such as HAZMAT and require some forms of safety certification etc. etc.
Not my field so do not know what would be required for a chemical.

May I ask what this chemical is or does?
Just out of curiosity, why would someone buy this?

Thank you for all your help.
However, I have now wasted too many hours over this last week just to try to add an item to my seller catalogue, it has reached the point where it is going around in circles, I have no new information to add that they don’t already have, and they are just replying with the same email each time, saying that I can apply for exemption if I don’t have a GTIN.
As there is no GTIN, it seems the only way to list an item is that I will have to pay 112 GBP a year to GS1 to be able to receive up to 1000 GTINs.
However I only synthesize a single simple organic reagent and 112 GBP/year to be able to list it for sale on Amazon is too much. It probably is not a problem for most sellers, but I just don’t have any money to throw away at the moment, as I imagine even after paying for a GTIN there’s bound to be another problem that can only be fixed by throwing money at it.
So I admit defeat, even though I can synthesize chemicals, and build websites, I can’t list an item to sell on Amazon.co.uk
