Confused over white backgrounds?

Hi all,
I was under the impression that white backgrounds are compulsory.
Is that the case?
If so then how do some sellers show an item, say a wicker hamper for instance full of stuff in a decorated living room??
A regular catalogue item not Handmade catalogue.
Also its an Amazon Choice item???
Any ideas??

For main images yes. As to why some do not follow the policy: ignorance, negligence or willfulness are likely the 3 main reasons. Like a lot of things on Amazon, either follow the policies or take a risk.
