Read onlyTalked with support and if you use USPS to ship some smaller lighter packages, please be aware that Amazon is not closing on 1/9/25. Even though the President signed it as a day of mourning and USPS will be closed, Amazon is operating as scheduled and requires you to ship and have the packages picked up that same day if you currently offer same day shipping. Prepare to paying more to another carrier to ship your packages and potential profit loss on your orders.
It might be that Seller Support is describing this in a very confusing matter. Which tends to happen.
A ship by date is not necessarily the same as the deliver by date. If it is a public holiday, its possible Amazon has incorporated that into the formula to derive the "deliver by" date. Meaning, you should process the labels on the same day. But you can hand it off to USPS the following day.
However, its possible that Amazon screwed up when adding a holiday to the formula...which also tends to happen. If that is the case then, yes. You should sacrifice margin and ship your items with another carrier to avoid having your shipping metrics suffer.
I can verify that, at least currently, this is the case. I have one order with a "Ship By" date of Jan 9. So they have not figured the holiday into their algorithm.
We ship only USPS ground under a pound. We will have to set ourselves to Vacation since Amazon makes us do one day handling before any orders come in on the 8th! What a sad situation. How long does it take for the setting to vacation to take effect. In other words by what time tomorrow will we have to go on vacation?
Thank You for your insights to this issue.
This is A huge PROBLEM, as Amazon's computer MAY force FBM Sellers to ALWAYS ship a particular ASIN in the manner that your shipping history demonstrates. IF you ship an ASIN in 1-day handling time, Amazon may FORCE you to ALWAYS ship that ASIN next-day!
I too have at least 2 orders (so far) that ship USPS, and have been scheduled by Amazon to ship-by Thursday, 01-09-25, even though the Post Office WILL be CLOSED that day!
IF I ship LATE, I LOSE all of the Seller protections Amazon provides.
I have NO CHOICE but to ship Thursday's orders TOMORROW (Wednesday), and HOPE that Amazon does NOT alter my 2-Day Handling Time for any ASIN I have to ship early!
Amazon! PLEASE MAKE THE NEEDED ADJUSTMENT! THURSDAY, 01-09-25 IS A DECLARED NATIONAL HOLIDAY.
Time is of the essence, so I would REALLY appreciate an Amazon MOD to chime-in here.
Yes, exactly!
It is amazing to me that Amazon cannot be responsive to this. It is a National Holiday.
I wonder if Amazon DC's will be open, and whether or not they will pay Holiday Time to their employees?
I am more than certain that Amazon Corporate will be Closed in observance of this Holiday.
YES, that is EXACTLY what I am saying.
A couple of months back Amazon sent out a release that stated their internal metrics showed that MOST orders ship Same-Day or Next-Day, and so, without warning, Amazon abandoned their "Standard" 2-Day Handling time and created an automatic 1-Day Handling time.
This caused a HUGE reaction among us Sellers, and appeared in this very Forum.
I found that the ONLY way I could restore my 2-Day Delivery Time was to edit each and every one of my (more than 3,500) listings and input a "2" in the "Handling Time" space. This was also a great time to set Maximum order quantity so you can't get cleared-out by one large order. When editing, Amazon will require that you input the "List Price", and that it exactly matches YOUR listed price.
When Amazon made this change, they made it very clear that IF a Seller "Regularly" ships a particular ASIN either Same-Day or Next-Day, the Amazon computer system MAY over-ride your existing 2-Day Handling Time and replace it with what the Amazon computer decides that you CAN ship Same-Day or Next-Day based on past performance.
THAT it why having to ship ALL of Thursday's orders on Wednesday is concerning to me...
Now is the time for an Amazon Mod to post an Official Amazon reply to this problem.
Unfortunately, Too many!
This is why I went to create a Post, only to discover that this post already existed.
Not that you would know unless you did a search, and why would you think to do so?
So, today I brought today's and tomorrow's orders to the USPS, and I won't be back to work until Friday morning.
That is because Amazon did NOT. In fact, to this day, Amazon has remained completely silent, including the Forum MOD's, which certainly implies that they have "Been TOLD" to keep silent about this.
By not recognizing the National Holiday 01-09-25, Amazon actually forces Sellers to consider going on "Vacation Mode" to avoid the problem of having to ship when the USPS will not accept packages.
If a motive could be ascribed to their actions, I am guessing it was a combination of the fact that this Holiday was VERY recently announced (and Amazon can be SLOW in responding), AND the fact that by Amazon NOT recognizing this Holiday, Amazon will NOT have to pay "Holiday Pay" to their employees.
I am anticipating many Posts here complaining about the Negative Consequences that arose from the USPS being closed on 01/09, yet Amazon scheduling orders to be shipped on 01/09...
So much for Supporting their "3rd Party Sellers", right?
Thank you for your questions about this Thursday's Day of Remembrance/Observance and the associated USPS closure.
I would like to share the following information that has been posted by some sellers, including in the National Day of Mourning is January 9th thread:
"We're taking action to protect your business: To ensure that your business is not negatively impacted by the USPS holiday on Thursday January 9th, Amazon will set this day as a holiday for USPS ship methods in Amazon FBM systems. As a result, all promised delivery dates will be automatically adjusted and extended by 1 day. No additional action is required on your end."
I shared this and related threads with our partner teams and will follow up with any additional information. Please note that other non-USPS shipping services will be available for shipping as usual.
National Day of Mourning is January 9th
USPS closing Thursday Jan 9th 2025 for the National Day of Observance
Wow! Talk about closing the Barn Door AFTER the horse escaped! WHERE was this info when we could actually use it?
Really? Because ALL of my orders that displayed a Ship-By date of 01-09-25 today (01-08-25) STILL displayed a "Ship-By" date of 01-09-25!
So, just WHERE did these "Adjusted" Delivery dates appear? They certainly were NOT there today, when I was FORCED to ship Thursdays orders on Wednesday.
And WHERE, EXACTLY did Amazon inform us of their proposed actions on the "National Day of Mourning?" I check the Seller Central News regularly, many times each day, and I never saw it.
At This Point, what I NEED for Amazon to do is to NOT edit any of the ASIN's I was forced to ship in 1-Day Handling Time (today) and then change the Handling Time from the established 2-Days, into 1-Day just because I shipped these particular ASIN's in 1-Day (today).
Does that make sense? Can I get any reassurance that Amazon will NOT change any of the ASIN's I shipped in 1-Day Handling time today?
Please?
Really? Because ALL of my orders that displayed a Ship-By date of 01-09-25 today (01-08-25) STILL displayed a "Ship-By" date of 01-09-25!
There are no adjustments being made to Ship By dates. While USPS is closed today, other shipping services are available today for your shipments, and sellers have the option to use them. I understand that many sellers prefer to use USPS services that are unavailable today, and I shared that feedback with our partner teams and will follow up with any updates.
Are you referring to the "Handling Time Automation" described in the OTDR FAQ?
AHT is enabled for sellers who have a handling time gap of 2+ days between their set handling times and actual handling times. That does not sound like it applies in your example, so please let me know if you are referring to a different guideline or update.
