New Seller - help please

Good Afternoon,

We are New to Amazon and are in a position to start listing some stock. My question pertains to product identifiers…EANS etc.

We manufacture all of our stock in house, be it, rubber washers…gaskets…seal rings in a variety of different materials and different thicknesses. The equipment to manufacture these items was developed by ourselves. As such all of our items are bespoke and to the customers required dimensions. On this basis do all permutations of the item require a discrete EAN? For information, we have about 300 listings on our eBay shop and each listing has up to 100 variations (or so).

Clearly, the above doesn’t present an issue with the eBay platform. So, is there a way to navigate around getting all the EAN numbers?

Any advice appreciated.

Some Amazon categories do not require you to have an EAN code to be able to create a listing, such as fashion jewellery. If they do, you will need to buy your own EAN codes online or request an exemption.

When you decide to send your inventory to the FBA, you will be able to print FNSKU barcodes, which will be used to identify your products, even if you don’t have any manufacturer’s barcodes.

I thought Ebay had moved to wanting barcodes now - perhaps not yet. You have 2 choices - either buy barcodes (1 for EVERY variation) but only from GS1 who are the only supplier Amazon accept or apply Brand registration with Amazon. - Certain conditions to meet.

Do you send out your current ebay sales in branded or unbranded packaging?

I’m assuming you cannot physically brand washers and gaskets (apart from massive ones), so you’re going to need to have something in place to stop copycat items being sold on the same listing.

Longer term you’re probably best getting a TM and then using that for Amazon Brand registry (They won’t let you in the club unless you’ve got a registered TM). You’ll also probably find it worth while getting some codes from GS1… If eBay go down the same route as Amazon, you’ll already be all set and won’t need to worry.

Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to try and save money by buying codes anywhere other than from GS1.

Thankyou all for the replies.
So - if we sell in branded packaging, we can apply for TM and get ‘anonymity’ using Amazon Brand Registry?

All clear and understood concerning GS1 EANS.

Many thanks, Tony

You will need to have a registered trademark to apply for Amazon’s Brand Registry programme. You cannot do this with products that are simply branded as your own, unless you register that brand first which takes about a month, Brand registry then takes a month once you register that Brand with Amazon.
