Austrian VAT Number, what to do?
Hi,
This has been covered before but none of the topics cover my question.
This is what we received today (I presume everyone got this message)…
Austrian tax obligation deadline approaching
If you are selling in Austria, and do not have an Austrian VAT registration number in Seller Central, you must take action by the end of the year.
- If you are required to be VAT registered in Austria, upload your Austrian VAT registration number or tax ID by December 31, 2020, or you may lose your selling privileges in Austria.
- If you are not required to be VAT registered in Austria, ensure that you have uploaded another available VAT registration number held in another EU member state on [Seller Central]
We are not registered for Pan EU FBA. We are registered for VAT in DE/ES/IT/FR/UK. We do not meet the distance selling threshold for Austria. We do not hold stock in Austria.
This is the confusing bit…
“If you are not required to be VAT registered in Austria, ensure that you have uploaded another available VAT registration number held in another EU member state on [Seller Central]”
Does this mean I need to add Austria on the VAT page, and put a UK/German VAT number in? The default when you do this is asking for an “AT” number, which I don’t have, and don’t need. This can be deleted, but I’m not sure?
I just don’t know if ignoring this is the right thing to do.
Has anyone else in a similar situation added a VAT number for another country?

I have just looked further into this, and found this…
What do I do if I am not required to be VAT registered in Austria?
If you are not required to be VAT registered in Austria, please ensure that you have uploaded another available VAT registration number held in another EU Member State on Seller Central. For example, if you have a German VAT number, please upload this to Seller Central against Germany if it has not already been uploaded.
This would suggest that If you don’t need to register for Austrian VAT you DO NOT need to add “Austria” with a different EU Vat number.
I should have checked this to start with but i’m sure there will be lots of people in a similar boat to whom this could be useful.
