Who runs their company from home and do you use your home address on companies house?

Hi,

I run my company from home, but pay for an external business address which costs a good bit, but it can be awkward as the business address people will only send me certain mail I receive and I have used my personal address for something on Amazon and my business address for some other stuff and now amazon has messaged me saying my addresses don’t match so this is now an issue.

So wondering if you own a ltd business from your home, do you use your home address on the companies house register and have you found it to cause any issues doing this?

Thanks

We run our business from home and pay Royal Mail for a PO BOX. You have two options with this, either collect from your local distribution office or have the mail forwarded to your home address. This works for us as we use RM Tracked Returns for any returns and they can obviously map PO BOX to an address.

I run my business from home as a partnership and therefore it is displayed just like a Ltd and in almost 15 years, touch wood , I’ve never had any issues

Before I rented a space for my business and when I was working from home as a limited company, my accountant allowed their address to be used which I think is a common thing. I guess it depends on what you receive to that address. If you are accepting returns there then it’s probably not the best choice but if it’s just correspondence mine just used to forward it on.

Pretty sure you can have a different returns address set up anyhow in Amazon. I found this out when I thought I had updated all the addresses in amazon for my business when we moved, only to find that an automated return big parcel from Amazon scheduled to go to my old address! Luckily seller support sorted that for me once I’d quickly found that section in Amazon and updated it.

What about identify theft as I have read it can be quite easily to happen with Companies house details being available?

Intermittently I’ve used my home address and it’s normally not a problem. There are 2 downsides:

  1. People turn up at your front door as if you were a shop, wanting to see the items in person (rare but happened to me twice in the 5 years home address was used)
  2. Once had a very angry father send a message threatening to turn up and physically attack me because his teenage daughter had purchased some hair accessories; It was against his religion for her to wear them (I’m a single female so this was my turning point as it made me feel unsafe).

So I use capital office. They are meh but I’m set up with them and can’t be asked to change. They changed their main address last year on very short notice, and you can imagine the chaos that caused, having to update it everywhere, with all the bank accounts, and we all know the dangers of updating such details on amazon. Nightmare. Also they recently started insisting on opening your ‘statutory’ mail (anything from HMRC), and scanning it (for a fee), and only then can you ‘special request’ via email that they forward it to you (for additional fee).

Considering they have only 2 jobs: be an address and forward mail, and they’ve caused me hassle with both recently, I wouldn’t recommend them atm. They were great up until last year though.

Keep in mind that your documents with your full personal details are on CH anyway, so people can still find you, just takes a few extra clicks and scrolling through some PDF’s.

My accountant also offers a registered address at his office, that appears to be a common thing as well.

I have been using my parents address for the last 5 years for company registration and on Amazon, but have changed to my home address for all of Amazon returns and corres and have never suffered any problems.

I’ve decided to change my address to my house address because I didn’t see the point in paying extra when I was only using it for CH for the registered company office address and that was basically it. I have been using my home address for Amazon contact details/returns, so my address has been on amazon for over 8 years without any issue so thought may aswells just having the CH address the same now.
