VAT Exempt - .IT Customer charged VAT - Now wants VAT invoice

I am a UK based VAT exempt business. A customer purchased through my italian Amazon a product that he was charged VAT on. The customer (personal account NOT business) now is requesting an invoice.

I have supplied him with the auto generated invoice which shows correctly that I did not collect VAT.

Naturally the customer wants one that shows what he believes he paid (and a VAT number)

Amazon just relentlessly suggests I contact an accountant. Is anyone able to shed some light on what I should do to break this endless cycle?

Thank you

Hi
If you are VAT exempt, you have correctly provided an invoice with no VAT added
Personally I would Amazon message him again, telling him that you have not charged him VAT and have provided an invoice reflecting that .
I would advise you to end all correspondence .as you have followed Amazon Policy correctly, unfortunately both SS and the AI bots know nothing about VAT! so you will end up in a endless cycle

I buy all my business items on my personal account… and I do expect invoices for everything for the tax man

Just because the customer can’t be bothered with signing out of their seller account into their business account every time they want to purchase something, don’t assume they aren’t a business.

You don’t have to have a business buyer account to buy as a business

We stopped selling to EU after Brexit (sales were negligible anyway). However, from what I understand, which may be wrong:
An EU consumer buys on Amazon from a U.K. seller and Amazon add the destination countries VAT to the sale and pay that directly to the VAT authorities. The seller does not see the VAT, although the value may be deducted from the sale price, to be put through their accounts as zero rated. (tough if you are not VAT registered, unless that has changed)
The customer has essentially paid VAT to Amazon and, as a business, could claim that back if they have a VAT invoice, which would need to be from Amazon, as they charged the VAT. However, a B2B sale, if the seller (which would be Amazon as far as just the VAT only is concerned) has the buyer’s VAT number, they can zero rate the sale. As the account was a personal one, Amazon charged VAT.
Sorry if that doesn’t make sense and is totally wrong.
