Looking for your opinions on this... (FBA Fees)

Hi Everyone,

The nightmare started in June when my account was deactivated due to a duplicate account violation, my account had been chugging away for 1 year prior to this with no issue. The violation was caused by an old partnership we had with a 3rd party manufacturer which had been terminated 2 years ago, but for some reason was picked up by Amazon and my account was promptly deactivated. After 3 months, 40 appeals (the limit) and 5 escalations, my account was finally reactivated 2 weeks ago.

Fast forward to today, during the time my account was deactivated I didn’t have much access to anything, all I could really do was appeal my deactivation. I am 100% FBA, I don’t hold any inventory myself, subsequently ALL my goods were sent to my home address, a total of 2500+ units of goods in around 30+ boxes which was a nightmare given that I have two children and not very much space as it is, I digress… So Amazon charged me £1,007 to send all the goods back to my house, even though I didn’t ask them to, I’ve raised 5 tickets since my reactivation and was told ‘I should have changed my settings whilst my account was activated’ which makes no sense as how could I have preempted my account being deactivated for partnership that was terminated 2 years ago? So that’s that one… THEN! I suddenly get an invoice for £617 for Amazon Ads! Yes… Amazon had activated ads on my account with NO STOCK (because they’d already sent stock back to me) and was serving ads, I raised a ticket with the Ads team and they told me they have an ‘intelligent algorithm’ that predicts when stock may return and gives customers an estimate, bearing in mind I hadn’t even created a shipping plan yet.

It’s got to the point now that when I raise a new ticket for these issues, I get a copy/paste of how charges are calculated and step-by-step of how to turn Ads off etc… basically being fobbed off.

I was wondering what you guys think of the whole situation? As I am the one emotionally invested in this situation, I feel my emotions may be clouding my judgement so I’m looking for impartial opinions, if you think Amazon is in the right and I’ve made these mistakes, that’s fine, I’ll take it on the chin as a mistake on my part, but if not, how should I proceed? I’m thinking small claims court possibly.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, I really do appreciate it, honestly… and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Well a couple of things here.
First, the fees for returning your goods on a very rough look, appear to be about right.
The way you need to look at that one, is that if they hadn’t returned your goods, you would have been charged storage fees and with the time scales your talking about, they would have charged you about the same, to destroy the goods.
So on balance, I would say that you have come off reasonably well with it.

As to the Ad’s, I have very little experience with it.
But certainly on the face of it, you should have stopped the advertising.
Did you raise tickets to do this at the time?

In any case, if you are getting fobbed off, your only real option is to escalate to the MD’s team and finally, go to mediation if that doesn’t work.

Not too familiar with the intricacies of billing for ads, but I find it hard to believe that ads run when there is no stock on a listing since Amazon try quite hard to not direct buyers to an empty listing… Isn’t it possible to check the period they are billing for and confirm it it for the period with no stock? The answer given by Support about future stock dates seems to be about a slightly different aspect of selling.

In any event, I would think that the removal fees are unavoidable but if the ads were running when there was no stock then the MD / mediation should at worst case make some kind of payment.
