Create variation from two existing listings - am I doing this right?
Hello - I have two existing (non-variation) listings. One currently in stock (Listing 1), the other is new and inactive (out of stock) (Listing 2). I’d like to create a variation relationship using these two listings. I just want to check that my approach will work correctly:
- Create new product listing
- Variations Tab -> Create 2 variations
- Variation 1: Populate the same Seller SKU, Product ID, Condition, Price from Listing 1
- Variation 2: Populate the same Seller SKU, Product ID, Condition, Price from Listing 2
- Under each variation, in green text, I see: “This product will be matched to: ‘Existing Listing Title’” with a details link. The details link pops up with the existing listing saying to confirm the correct match for your product.
- Choose “Select and update offer” from the details link for both
- Save and Finish
Will this create a new parent SKU and convert the two existing listings into children as desired?
Will this change the FNSKU’s for the existing listings? The FNSKU barcode is printed on my packaging so this would be an issue
Appreciate any advise, thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for your post.
I haven’t gone through this process in sometime but what you have provided in your post sounds correct. The system will create a new ASIN and SKU for the parent of the variation as one does not exist for the products.
The SKUs of the existing listings will remain the same as long as you enter the exact SKU and ASIN that are already assigned to the existing listings in your inventory, even for the one that is out of stock. Therefore the FNSKU will also remain the same.
As the listings exist in the catalogue please use the ASIN as the Product ID when creating the variation so they will match to the correct items.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Jessica

hi what you have put will work you can also do via xlm upload here is the information on how to go about this
- Download the appropriate category template for your category using the Product Classifier or Templates for Specific Categories.Refer to the Valid Values tab in the template to see what variation themes are available.Note: If no variation theme is listed, you cannot create a product with variations in that category.
- In the inventory template, create parent and child SKUs.
- On the parent item:
- Enter values for required fields, including SKU.This can be any alphanumeric string of 40 characters or less, but must be unique (i.e., must not duplicate any of your other SKUs). Sellers often append “-parent” to their base SKU to remind them that this is a parent SKU.
- Leave Parent SKU field blank.
- Enter a value of “parent” in Parentage and enter a valid value in Variation Theme .
- Leave Relationship Type blank.
- Leave all other non-required fields blank.
- For each child item:
- Enter values for required fields
- Fill in the Parent SKU field using the value from the parent’s SKU (this value will be the same for all child items).
- Enter a value of “child” in Parentage and enter “variation” in Relationship Type .
- In the Variation Theme field, enter the same value that you entered for Variation Theme on the parent (this value will be the same for all child items).

This will only work if the manufacturer is identical. If there is slightly different presentation of the name eg: ltd and limited then they won’t pair up.
I have tried asking Amazon to correct this loads of times but they say only the brand owner can do it. They then send me instruction on how to register the brand.
I have never done this as I think I would end up in a whole world of trouble if I register someone elses brand.
