Help and advice with GTIN exemption for own manufactured product

Hi,

I am aware this is a question that has been asked and answered several times, but the more I read, the more my ideas get confused. I will make this brief, and more specific as possible.

I want to start selling my own manufactured board game. I will sell through FBA, and won’t sell the product on any other marketplace. Before entering in mass production:

  • I don’t understand if my packaging has to have any barcode at all
  • I understand that I could get a UPC, but this is expensive (unless going unwise ways)
  • I understand that I can apply for GTIN exemption (but I also read this could be rejected as I’m a new seller?)
  • I understand I could get a trademark, but is this required to apply for the exemption?

I want to get my board game manufactured and listed in the quickest way possible. I understand that a trademark will take long time, so could I apply for a trademark while my listing is live already?

I will be happy if someone could briefly advise me on what to do, I will research the right information/steps by myself. I am just very confused at the moment, and when I read something that seems right, the next thing I read is the complete opposite.

Others will know more & better, but since it’s late here’s a few thoughts for starters.

Your product doesn’t have to have a barcode to sell on Amazon (see below), but if it does then it should be from GS1 to avoid potential issues. If you were to get a barcode then i can’t think of a good reason not to have it on the packaging. I know you mention not selling anywhere but Amazon, but you should really be thinking long-term and a barcode now at the outset could make things easier later should you have other avenues.

Yes you can apply for a GTIN exemption, but a trademark is only required to apply for Brand Registry. Trademarks and patents aren’t really my thing, but i’d assume you’d want as much protection as possible before going to market?

Something else for you to consider, if you haven’t already, is the requirement for a CE mark or maybe a UKCA marking so your product is certified safe to use. Depending on the ages involved i think Amazon would require it for most toys and games - i think it’s 14 and below but might be wrong on that.

Thanks for everyone’s responses. I am open to receive other opinions. In the meantime, I have a potentially related question. Listing as own brand or not, does this have any impact on the extra description space you are given under your product details? I don’t know how to call that space, it’s full-width, and you can insert more pictures and descriptions.
