Turn over less than £85,000/year, need UK VAT register?
Hi, I’m a UK seller. My account has been suspended 2 months due to missing VAT number in UK. I consulted my accountant, he said that my annual turn over was below £85,000 so I didn’t need to register the VAT number. Two months ago I filed the appeal but so far I didn’t receive amazon responded. It seems like that the VAT number is necessary if selling on amazon UK now. Does anyone with experience?

There is nothing official to the effect of requiring all UK sellers to be registered for VAT.
Maybe your sales indicated that you might exceed the threshold which triggered this suspension?

HMRC advise that:
Compulsory registration
You must register for VAT if:
** your VAT taxable turnover is more than £85,000 (the ‘threshold’) in a 12 month period**
** you expect to go over the threshold in a single 30 day period**

If you are based outside UK , this may be the problem as HMRC want you VAT registered

Your company is based in the UK:
- You MUST register for VAT if you exceed the threshold of £85,000 in any 12 month window or expect to do so in a single 30 day window.
- You can voluntarily register below this threshold
Your company is based outside the UK:
- If you store your goods outside the UK and ship them in to the UK to buyers you must register as above but based on the lower distance selling threshold of £70,000
- If you store any goods in the UK, even one item, you must register for VAT immediately. This applies if using Amazon fulfillment centres directly or indirectly through Pan-European FBA.
From what I’ve seen Amazon don’t actually demand VAT information for no reason, though people like to make out that’s the case. Personally I’m glad if Amazon start to crack down and level the playing field.

Amazon seem to be saying you need to be registered for VAT anyway.

I think if you sell on FBA you need to be registered now. I think Amazon are slowly trying to get rid of all non VAT registered businesses due to bad press.
