UPS MISTAKE?! Duty and VAT shipping from UK to Italy
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has specific knowledge of duties/ VAT when shipping from the UK to Italy.
We have just shipped a £500 projector and been presented with a bill for 237.74 euros “154.70 euros of VAT and 83.04 euros of duty (at a rate of 14%)”. So this represents a bill of over 40% of the sell price!!
I am absolutely positive we have never paid anywhere near this before but UPS will not listen to reason!

VAT rate in Italy is 22%
So a 500 item would attract 110 VAT
Duty would be due as the item is over the 150 threshold
For the 44.70 difference in VAT - was it perhaps VAT on the shipping charge as this has to be included as well. So if Shipping was about 200 this would account for the difference.
