Read onlyHi, I currently don't have a trademark so am living without the benefits of brand registry. Currently I list all my stuff as generic which seems to have an overwhelming level of protection but I don't get A+ content etc, but is this worth £170 to register the trademark, I have no other reason to register a trademark
If they are branded, its your trademark, items are selling and you are making money I would personally register for a trademark and protect the listing.
People will and do, try and kick you off successful listings or claim its their product and register a trademark to it.
I leant the hard way
If its your own line Brand register it or other ssellers will copy and jump on your listings and ruin your hard work, This is from experience!
It's not really a question of whether it is worth getting a trademark for brand registry, it is a case of whether it is worth branding in the broader sense.
My answer to this is yes. It is possible to build a brand through Amazon but building it outside is also a huge opportunity,.
The primary reason is the pitfalls as others have stated on this thread, the more successful you are at not being brand registered, the more you are exposing yourself to risk of others pulling the rug out from underneath you.
You now have the benefit of hindsight and if you are doing ok with the listings as generic along with repeat buyers, having a brand will assist you in upselling and ensuring a consistent return.
Listings on Amazon will tend to improve over time and you can also work on your sales rank. I would never optimise a generic listing as one day you may find that listing will end up with someone else on as your biggest rival.
Don't ponder on it if you can see potential in Amazon, push on and do it immediately.
When I started many years ago, I used to go onto other listings with what were classed as generic. The issue is that having numerous sellers on the same generic listings will have have different colour matches and ways of doing things making the product inconsistent so the customer does not understand what they will be getting especially in terms of quality. This will then push down the sales rank of the listing and ultimately everyone loses. Basically if you have your own product and want to build on it, branding is actually a key part to this so getting a trademark is a no brainer.
i guess it depends on the product. If the product can easily be purchased freely by someone else definitely trademark your brand.
As for the A++ content, i dont really think it makes any difference to sales but its worth doing anyway for what its worth.
Remember that it takes months for the trademark to go through so do it sooner rather than later and make sure everything matches up to the trademark info or amazon will have you jumping through hoops surprise surprise.
I find mine invaluable and worth every penny as some years back, people thought they could list similar items against mine. Usually a polite email letting them know did the trick - most people don't realise and some said Amazon told them it was okay.
There was one who wouldn't stop but after a test purchase and a report to Amazon, it was quickly sorted - cost me a little in sales for a little bit. The cost of a Trademark could save you a lot in the long run, especially if you are the manufacturer and designer.
