Simply not worth selling on Amazon anymore

The fees on Amazon are just ridiculous. We sell computers and computer components and since September 2020 Amazon have increased the fees and changed categories for some items.

15.3% fee on products up to £100… there isn’t even 15.3% margin in most of the products we sell since they increased fees.

We used to pay 7% on all components which was doable but 15.3% means a loss on every product.
We pay 7% on computer sales but Amazon are clearly trying to get rid of sellers offering components.

Will be closing our account at the end of December.

Whilst I appreciate that the fees are high, it’s not something that they hide when you signup for an account. Margins are extremely tight on a lot of different lines, certainly not just computer components.
But that particular type of item is a very competitive field anyway, so not sure why your that surprised to be honest?

Obviously someone is making some money selling these kind of things at the prices you are trying to compete at. Perhaps you need to look at your suppliers for better prices?

I’m kind of puzzled as to why you would think a fee of 15% is particularly high? If you look at the other platforms, the fees are about the same or even more. Don’t forget, when you list on Amazon, you don’t pay a penny until an item is sold, whereas on other platforms you pay a listing fee upfront and if it doesn’t sell, you’ve lost that fee. Even using shop fronts on other platforms, you’re still paying a flat monthly fee for say 200 listings, about £30 if memory serves. If you buy something at an auction, the auction house charges you anywhere between 20 and 25% plus VAT. Everybody has fees; they have to in order to make a profit.

Amazon is about the same as Ebay fee wise for me.

In fact once Ebay force me over to their Managed Payments system in January, Amazon will be cheaper.

That and I do about two or three times the amount of sales here.

I don’t really understand this. The point of forums is to discuss and converse yes but just moaning about the things wont change anything. Nobody is forcing anybody to sell on amazon. Obviously at some point it was viable or at least you believed it would be but that was a risk you took. Something changed so why dont you adapt and move on? Instead of trying to spread your negative attitude just close your account. At the end of the day it is a business and you are paying them for a service - but nobody is making you. Cleary you don’t become one of the largest companies in the world by giving everybody free access to your selling services.

My forum profile says I joined in 2012 but I was on the old prospero forum long before that.
I actually joined Amazon as a seller quite a while before they even had a forum for the UK (I think they had a US only forum way back in the early 2000s).

I found this snippet from when the current boards were new (to the USA, in 2012):

This is the third time Amazon has moved to a new discussion forum. The original forum in 1999 was hosted by Amazon. In late 2000 (I think!) we were moved to Prospero. The forum was on Prospero until February of 2006. So we have moved every 6 years. The post total from Prospero was carried over to the recent forum. Evidently not happening this time around.

(Probably best to open the link in a private browser window if you don’t want to risk getting logged-out of your current active Amazon log-in)

I do vaguely remember the pre-prospero forums.
I even managed to join the US forum at one stage, even though I didn’t have a US selling account.

How can you find when you began selling on Amazon?
