Don't need UPC code for existing listings?
Would I be correct in saying I do not need to have a UPC Code if I am competing against an existing product listing?
I know I need to sell the EXACT same product to compete against a current listing, but is there an actual advantage to this? Of course I imagine you can like piggyback off the traffic of somebody else’s listing, but I for one have never clicked on the ‘other sellers’ for a product I have searched for, even if the price is lower.
I very much want to create a new product listing as I can use my own pictures…etc and make the listing my own, and I know I will need a UPC code for this.
I’ve read through a few threads on here but I still can’t seem to get a definite answer.
Any help would be appreciated.

Amazon operates on a catalogue model. If the exact same product is already in the catalogue, you list against it. If the exact product isn’t in the catalogue, you first need to add the product, then you list against it.
Creating duplicate products is against policy and it is likely to be merged into the existing product at some point in the future.
The person who first created the product catalogue item doesn’t necessarily win the buy box; lower price, faster fulfilment (e.g. FBA) and good performance metrics can help you win the buy box. You can also add extra images to the existing listing, but they may not be selected to be displayed to customers.
