Thoughts about Onbuy?

,Before I take the plunge and put my first item on Amazon, I am looking at Onbuy. Anyone using them?

just started - I put 70 good selling items on and not a sale in 6 weeks - they were also put cheaper than Amazon and Ebay to give them a fighting chance.

They did say Paypal would be the payment option in January but that has still not happened to date.

I paid for the one month then you get the year free - so have another 10 months to see if it’s worth the effort.

never heard of them.

they’ve got no contact details on the web site which is against the law so does not instil me with confidence.

According to their facebook page details they are a web design company based in Poole.

there are number of amazon, ebay, etsy clones doing the rounds in the UK at the moment but few of them have any traffic and customers.

Probably go the way of Buuy at some stage and do the rounds asking sellers to help pay towards their costs.

Took their option of paying for Nov and December and getting this whole year’s listings for free. One sale in nearly 4 months. Unless it picks up I won’t be continuing beyond 2018 especially as my inventory management system is unlikely to support them unless they make it really big.

waste of time, i have been on them for months and not seen a sniff of a sale. Ok its a pretty new platform so maybe hasn’t got the footfall as yet, but lives too short to spend time and effort listing items that won’t sell.

i have abandoned it for now but might return in 6 months or so to see if it has picked up

Have been on since November and currently taking advantage of a year of free subscription fees as we signed up b4 Christmas. So far had about 200 sales (low value items) - no where near as good as Amazon but will stick with it for this year as no brainer with no subscription fees and all our stock is added. To be honest we have done lots better than I thought we would - I was expected a handful of sales in this time - so quite pleased so far.

They seem fairly expensive especially if stuff does not sell, even when you take into consideration the fee discounts.

Plus having a payments method that’s fairly unknown

Monthly fees + selling fees at 9% and 1.4% + 20p for the payment method.

Is it right to promote another platform here?

Newcomers are a good thing and some do succeed but the comment from some sellers here that they are ditching Amazon to focus on Onbuy is a little misguided or even foolish.

Somebody mentioned they had a tv ad. Personally I never heard of them except on the forum. When Amazon first started, they had an absolutely massive advertising budget. They has a small ad on pretty much every web page that you happened to be looking at, even so many years ago.

Their business plan was obviously to lose big time for a number of years until they reached break even. That’s the way to get customers.

Drip by drip as what onbuy seem to be doing is not the way to compete these days.

I won’t be wasting any of my time listing there. ebid was and still is a damp squib and fortunately I only wasted the lifetime fee and a little time.

I wish them luck though. Some competition is healthy but there’s a little way to go before anyone at Amazon gets to hear about them.

Just my thoughts.

Many thanks for your contributions. My first thoughts are that these guys who are introducing OnBuy are very courageous and deserve some support. I do agree that their prices are not much below the competition and will be even less so when they get PayPal on board. However, it’s nice to get the personal attention they give to enquiries.
I’ve been trading on eBay for several years. I’ve been more than satisfied with that site until recently when my competition started to panic at lack of sales and went in at well below cost price just to offload stock. My understanding is that there are less d###heads on Amazon, so I started to make enquiries and registered with them. I am a small seller by comparison to you guys, and I don’t want to allow turnover to go above VAT threshold. My goods sell between £17 and £70 so the way I think I will go is as follows
Place some of my stock on Amazon as a small trader and suffer the 70p or so charge when they sell, together with Amazon’s percentage. So I don’t get any up front costs. My prices may need to be increased slightly.
Pay OnBuy the £19.00 once only fee for a year and put the same stock on there as well.
Again paying nothing until they sell
I may be wasting my time and money with OnBuy, but it’s worth the risk I think

Has anyone had any sales worth talking of? We joined as a trial in mid January 2018 selling garden benches and dining chairs priced at or below our Ebay and Amazon prices. Not a single sale in 3 months or more! In the same period on the other channels we have sales well into six figures Clearly the traffic numbers are not there? I asked them for traffic numbers for our categories and (or) products. They declined to give me any figures that they clearly have in their Google Anlytics data. They are probably embarrsed by the low numbers. My best selling products sell well everywhere but there. I really do wish the guys well but I fear they won’t have deeep enough pockets to get anywhere near the two major players to get the traffic they need to make it.
