This SKU has an inconsistent product classification with the ASIN

I wanted to offer some advice to anyone getting this error message:

“This SKU has an inconsistent product classification with the ASIN. Please submit a feed to update this SKU to match the ASIN product classification.”

I’ve seen some previous posts asking about this such as Help with an error message when trying to put listing up but they are closed so I cannot add to them.

We have in-house software that generates a CSV file for upload to Amazon via the “Add Products via Upload” page. We’ve listed many variation listings before but with a new product we’re bringing to market found that the newly listed parent had a status of “Incomplete” and clicking it to edit it brought up a page with the above error message.

I spent 5 days chasing a support case and got a series of useless answers including “just delete the listings and try again”, “change Update to PartialUpdate”, etc until finally one of their support team pointed out my error.

I was using Variation_Theme of “SizeName” and filling in the various sizes of each variation in the Size_Name column of the template spreadsheet, but my values were not unique. Because our product comes in a “Left” and a “Right” orientation, there are two variations under each parent that are the same size, but different orientations.

So in my case, the solution was to change the values in Size_Name to be unique, for example instead of “Widget A 1500mm x 1600mm” (which appeared twice), I must use “Widget A 1500mm x 1600mm, Left” and “Widget A 1500mm x 1600mm, Right”.

As soon as I made this change and uploaded the CSV again (with all the ASINs of the previously created products in the external_product_id column and “ASIN” in external_product_id_type), the parent item very quickly changed to status “Active” and all seems good with the world.

In conclusion, in my case the “This SKU has an inconsistent product classification with the ASIN” is completely misleading and seems to have nothing to do with the error. The actual response from the support team was:

“”"
I would like to inform you that “This SKU has an inconsistent product classification with the ASIN. Please submit a feed to update this SKU to match the ASIN product classification”, this error message will be displayed when the parent ASIN is not created successfully.

The reason for incomplete Parent ASIN is because, while uploading a Feed file, 2 child SKUs have similar size attributes and hence it affected in creation variation and since the variation was not created successfully, the Parent ASIN was incomplete.
“”"

This seems like a poor answer but did at least lead to a solution. I hope this helps someone!

Normally when 2 child ASINs have duplicate values this will not affect the parent ASIN in any way, it will simply leave 1 child out of the variation (a single-child variation can exist and a parent can even exist with no children).

Was the parent ASIN at the end of the csv or the start? it’s possible that it was failing to create the parent because a child was placed before it in the file and was failing.

If you ever get an issue like this in future, try creating the ASINs through seller central, if you need to upload the CSV in order for your 3rd party software to link up properly/etc. then you can upload it with just the ASIN and SKU with update type set to partialUpdate

attempting to create it through seller central will usually display more logical error messages than a csv upload, which will in turn allow you to fix the errors in the upload file.
