Can someone please help me?
I am an individual seller - I sell only books. I have declared my VAT registration exemption status. I don’t sell many books, maybe on average one a week, so I do not make much money.
Amazon have been sending me monthly UK Seller Fees VAT Invoices : I can see that Amazon are adding 20% VAT to their Fee for each book I sell.
I do not understand why they are doing this or if they should be doing it.
Can someone please help me with this.
Thank you.
CJS.

Amazon fees do have VAT added for all sellers.
If you are VAT registered then you can claim them back, but as an Individual seller you cannot.
Just like you pay VAT on your utility bills etc.

Vat is something we all pay for goods/services, whether you are vat registered or not. It is only now that you are a business and being billed separately that you notice it - next time you are buying your personal groceries from the supermarket, or your petrol from the garage check the receipt, you’ll notice it has a line telling you how much vat you paid. It is simply a tax that has to be charged by businesses with a certain turnover (or any that voluntarily registered early) that is paid to the government.
Vat registered companies can offset the vat they collect on sale against the vat they pay for goods/services.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean the service whereby Amazon provide receipts for your orders? If so, that isn’t really being exempt from VAT despite Amazon using the term “exempt”.
