The continuing UTR farce
After having trouble getting my account validated, I finally ascertained from Amazon that they required a letter from HMRC saying I had applied for self assessment and the UTR code this brings. However, three weeks later I have received nothing from HMRC and cannot reach them on the phone or otherwise. Amazon have been paying me small installments but now they owe me over £200. I can’t get it until I get that letter, but how do I even know they will send it?
I asked if I could access my account if I promised to upload the letter when I got it. Nothing doing. How can I fix this?
They are not treating their sellers very well, in my opinion. They don’t deserve us.

Sorry, but why do you think it’s up to Amazon to tell you that you need to be self employed?
Surely, this is something that you found out prior to starting a business?
Why can’t you reach HMRC on the phone? They are normally pretty good and you get through within a few minutes.
Why not try visiting one of the local offices instead, if you can’t get through on the phone?
It normally takes a couple of weeks for a letter to come through from HMRC, but with the strikes etc, I wouldn’t be that surprised if it took longer.
As to the instalments your getting, at a guess, it’s because you have a limit on your account. This won’t change. You get your money once it’s released, which can take up to about 3 weeks.

How did you register with HMRC as self-employed ? - presumably sole-trader - via the online registration ?
They do usually send your UTR within a couple of weeks, and you should be able to call them, so don’t know why you say you can’t get through on the phone.

Many sellers have probably been doing what I was doing. It would be nice if Amazon explained this from the start.
But they didn’t, probably because the govt wasn’t pressuring them before.
