Lowest Shipping costs

Hi All,

We are going to be sending very small items (8x5cm, ~10g) via FBM. I was exploring options and initially thought we’d ship 1st or 2nd class but 0.85p for a stamp?? the last I checked many many moons ago it was about 30p. This inflation thing is really starting to get out of hand.

Can someone recommend a game plan ? what options do I have ? we want to keep costs as low as possible, and are initially expecting to ship somewhere in the region of 1-5 letters a day.

EDIT: No discounts either it seems. 10K 1st class reel is still 85p per pop.

Yes unfortunately you need to be sending a very large quantity to get any sort of discount
If you are only sending a handful of that size, I’d stick with royal mail 2nd class bought directly off amazon

You are aware, that the 30p cost your thinking of, will be for a standard letter.
At 85p, it’s a large letter. There is a difference. So check sizes.

And obviously, the prices have increased somewhat since then.

RM price rises are not at all in line with inflation. Letter mail volume is decreasing every passing year now. So letter stamp prices will increase as demand wanes. The two main reasons large letters are cheaper than parcels: 1. they fit through most letterboxes, meaning the postie doesn’t waste time leaving a ‘we have something for you’ card and it doesn’t have to be stored in the depot and have an employee give it to the customer when they arrive to collect it. and 2. thin and flat items are far more easily conveyed in the processing centres, take up less volumetric weight when in a bunch, and are almost always able to be handled with one hand when manual handling is needed

Hi,

You might consider buying a second hand franking machine on eBay and franking all your mail.
(You can rent one from Pitney Bowes for around £20 per month)

Royal Mail 2nd Class letter up to 100g would cost you only 47p and 1st Class 72p

You can save on all other mailings as well but not to the same % level as with the letters.

We post out around 12 franked ‘letters’ per day which saves us around £2.00 per day - £50 per month just on those alone. So renting or buying still makes sense.

Your 5 letters per day would mean you would just about break even if renting but, if buying a machine you would save much more and you’d definitely be quids in if your volumes rose fairly quickly.

You can buy postage in advance fro Pitney Bowes online straight to the franking machine.

You will also save about 40p on any other small packages you send via RM
