Customer returned item and now its damaged beyond repair
A customer bought a DVD recorder supposedly not realising it was used (despite listing saying used) I reluctantly agreed to refund and he sent it back.
Just opened the box and it was returned in a different box that I sent but had plenty of bubble wrap and styrofoam to secure it and protect, however, the facia and loading section of the DVD looks like its been dropped with no packaging or in the packaging with no care whatsoever. severe dents and smashes and in bits in the box.
Thoughts?

Since you received your item back in a materially different condition than sent, you are within your rights to withhold the cost of loss of value out of the refund.
However, if you decide to do this, don’t forget to message the customer and explain why you decided to do so. You could also refuse to refund and offer them to provide you a pre-paid return label, so they can get the now damaged item back.

Is it definitely the one you sold them that has been returned to you ?
It has been known that customers return their old damaged/non working items and keep the good one.

Was the box / packaging they sent it back in damaged ? - proving it possibly was damaged in transit.
Be sure and take photos of packaging and item.
