Sold new book, buyer wants refund!
I am an author-publisher.
Received an order for a copy of my new book. Posted it within about an hour of receiving the order.
Next day the buyer applied to cancel the order as “no longer needed”. Wants a refund!
If I don’t refund, and I don’t see why I should, since they now have my brand new book, will Amazon punish me?

Just tell the customer you have already posted the book and if they no longer require it then to raise a return request and they can return it for a full refund less the cost of posting it back to you.
It sounds like a buyer trying it on to be honest and you will probably not hear anything else from them

I wouldn’t mention ‘less the cost of posting it back’ as that may prompt them to choose a reason that would give them a free return, just advise them of that once you have it back.
Be aware also you can make further deductions if it isn’t returned in the same condition as it was posted to them. (ie. if it is obvious they have read it!)

You are required by law and Amazon policy to accept returns of anything you sell online (with some exceptions such as customised products or for hygiene reasons), and to refund appropriately. “No longer needed” is a valid reason for returning your book
