Amazon pestering us for Polish VAT number

Amazon Germany are pestering us for a Polish VAT number, as if it is a compulsory requirement. Has anyone else had this? Since we don’t store any inventory there and we more or less never get any Polish customers anyway, I cannot understand why they are doing it.
