The customer needs to open a return and send the item back. Then you can refund them.
But if its and item of very low value, I personally would just refund it to get them off my back.
And obviously, it depends whether it’s FBA or FBM?
But you need to give a little bit more information here.

AMAZON SHOWS: For items purchased that are faulty after 30 days from date of Sale, click on this LINK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?ref_=hp_left_v4_sib&nodeId=G201953670 - It shows: Manufacturer Contact Details and After Sales Service. If your item becomes defective after 30 days, you may wish to contact the manufacturer for assistance. You won’t be able to return a product using the Returns Support Centre if it becomes defective after 30 days. You may wish to visit the manufacturer’s website or contact them directly as they may be able to offer troubleshooting and support with the issue you have with the product. Alternatively, please Contact us.
If an A-Z Claim, then quote the above to Amazon (include the link). Also, if over 90 days, point out is only supposed to be in exceptional circumstances to have A-Z Claim, although you can lose up to 6 months, it is unlikely if you have offered the Buyer a repair return and provided the return address.
However, the above is against UK law, and if they take you to court, you will lose. see Consumers Association (Which? - Google it) they explain the law from a Buyers side.
As under 6 months old, but over 30 days, you need to repair for free, as long as a manufacturing defect. Most makers include a repair under the manufacturers warranty, so you can arrange for the Buyer, but if not covered, you must cover the cost of a repair. Or, replace the item. If Buyer damage, then the Buyer has to pay, you don’t have to cover that, but the Buyer usually argues it was as new, etc, so you need proof to defend such actions.
NOTE: If a 2nd fault within 6 months, the Buyer is then entitled to a refund. so you may rather have the item back from the maker, and check it before returning to the Buyer.

SFP - Prime items, Buyer requests an Amz return, if not as new, as will be the case after 4 months use, take photos and refund 50% of the item cost. Then the Buyer gets the rest from Amz, and you complete a Safe-T Claim to get some of that 50% back.
Then, still get the item repaired and sell as a used item.

If a returns request, refuse as over the time for refund, but still email the Buyer to say can be repaired. YOU as the Seller by law need to resolve by arranging the return, providing the courier costs (pre-paid label etc).
It is rather concerning that Sellers do not know the law, no wonder Amz are as strict.
